The brief
Two buildings in one: a diplomat’s office and the city’s living room
The Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan needs a secure home in Midtown: consular services, diplomatic offices and four security zones. The brief pairs it with Azerbaijan House, a 100,000 sf cultural center open to everyone.
The lot wraps 801 Second Avenue, with 225 ft on 42nd Street, 148 ft on 43rd and 103 ft on Second Avenue. Public life comes in from 42nd; applicants, staff and loading come in from 43rd.
Research
Land of fire, city of winds
The design starts in Azerbaijan: a crossroads between Europe and Asia, a secular republic with a long tradition of tolerance, Baku’s sun and Caspian winds, and a culture of carpets, mugham music, hospitality and craft.
Those became the design’s rules: layered volumes and controlled thresholds, deep shade and thermal-mass limestone, bronze şəbəkə screens, and a civic ground that welcomes everyone.

Woven Thresholds
A caravanserai on 42nd Street. A honey limestone base, woven with the public cultural house, holds the street and the security; a curved glass crown holds the culture and opens to an 11,607 sf court in the sky.
- Carved, recessed portal on 42nd Street with the stair inside the recess
- Tall pilasters and a bronze şəbəkə lattice
- 8 floors + 2 cellars · 287,918 GSF

The Flame
The Land of Fire as one figure. Eight limestone tusks flare out at the sidewalk and become bronze ribs that twist upward and meet at a single spire, level with 801 Second Avenue. The flame is built from structure, never applied as an image.
- An amber glass body that swells to 148 ft, then tapers to a needle
- A 12,900 sf street plaza with a carved portal into the atrium
- 10 floors + 4 cellars · 277,635 GSF · tip about 280 ft

Xalça, the Carpet House
The carpet is the building. Azerbaijan House on 42nd Street and the consulate on 43rd are wrapped in one bronze screen woven like a carpet, with a border and lozenge medallions that glow at night. Between them, a garden carpet, a bağ xalçası, opens the block to the city.
- A 16,500 sf garden court open to 42nd Street and Second Avenue
- A sky bridge at Level 8 (+110 ft): the reception hall between the houses
- The mugham hall under the garden · 10 + 9 floors + 2 cellars · 278,230 GSF
